In view of the recent remarks made by Cai Ruifang, MD, Taiwan, on excimer laser corneal refractive surgery, the surgery has attracted widespread public and media attention. To this end, the Department of Ophthalmology, Chinese Medical Doctor Association special convened excimer laser surgery experts and experts on corneal diseases held a forum to review the state of twenty years of excimer laser surgery, reached a consensus as follows.
An excimer laser corneal refractive surgery is in China and the global ophthalmic surgeons and technical personnel as a result of the tireless efforts of treating ametropia. With the continuous progress of science and technology, the improvement of health level, this operation has become one of the important means for correcting ametropia, provides services to meet the many needs of patients with ametropia. Clinical practice over the past twenty years has shown that the procedure is safe and effective.
Two, our eye doctor in the excimer laser surgery is cautious, serious. In the operation access, instrument management, preoperative examination, indications, operation and postoperative management and other aspects of the relevant guidelines and operational norms.
Three, any medical means there is a certain risk, excimer laser corneal refractive surgery can not be completely avoided. The short-term and long-term complications of this surgery are very low, with the continuous efforts of ophthalmology medical staff and technical progress. Even if complications occur, as long as the timely treatment is controllable and curable.
