There are three important kinds of hepatitis B virus antigen, surface antigen (HBsAg) is a virus coat, because it was first found in Australia, so it was called "Australia antigen", referred to as "U"; e antigen (HBeAg) and core (HBcAg) is the central part of the structure of the virus.

These three antigens can stimulate the body to produce anti -HBs, anti -HBe and anti -HBc three antibodies. Because the HBcAg in the blood is not easy to be detected, so the detection of hepatitis B virus, these five indexes, we can only detect HBsAg, -HBs, anti HBeAg, anti -HBe and anti -HBc, so people often call them "hepatitis B five" or "two semi hepatitis b".

The five, if HBsAg, HBeAg and three indexes of anti -HBc positive, is often said that the "big Sanyang" hepatitis B infection; if the three indexes of HBsAg, anti -HBe and anti -HBc positive, is often said that the "small Sanyang" hepatitis B infection.

In general, e antigen (HBeAg) is a marker of HBV replication. Therefore, hepatitis B big three infected in vivo active viral replication, viral gene (DNA) tested positive for possible abnormal liver function; and "small Sanyang" hepatitis B virus infection in vivo in a relatively quiescent state, virus replication is less, the DNA test was negative, liver function is normal.
