Diabetic patients to understand the control of blood glucose level, blood glucose monitoring not only to each section, there is a very important examination of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c).

Why do patients with diabetes need to measure HbA1c?

Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) refers to glycosylated hemoglobin. When glucose and hemoglobin in the blood (i.e. hemoglobin) contact, the two will be the cross-linking saccharification irreversible together the slow formation of glycosylated hemoglobin. When the concentration of glucose in blood is higher, the HbA1c content of human body is relatively high. The general life of human red blood cells for 120 days, before the death of red blood cells, blood HbA1c levels will remain relatively constant, it seems that the HbA1c content in blood every 120 days change time, not affected by increased or decreased blood sugar once in a while. The daily blood glucose measurement in diabetic patients is only a reflection of the changes in blood glucose levels, and the HbA1c test can be seen in the past months, the overall blood glucose control. But the latest research shows that 51% of patients with diabetes have never heard of HbA1c, more than 10% of the patients on the annual HbA1c detection of less than once. In China, only 1/4 physicians recognize an important measure of glycemic control. Experts suggest that HbA1c should be conducted every three months.

Glycosylated hemoglobin

At present, the reference value of China's HbA1c is 4% - 6%, "Chinese Diabetes Prevention guidelines" recommended that the control of diabetes patients in the standard is below 6.5%. The study found that HbA1c increased by 1%, the risk of progression of retinopathy increased by 33%. There was a correlation between HbA1c and the incidence rate of congenital malformation in early stage of gestational diabetes mellitus, HbA1c < < 6.9% > > no deformity, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >. The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) showed that HbA1c decreased by 1% each, reduce diabetes related mortality was 21%; the incidence of myocardial infarction decreased by 14%; the rate of stroke decreased 12%; microvascular disease incidence decreased 37%; cataract surgery decreased 19%; peripheral vascular disease caused by amputation or mortality decreased 43%; heart failure incidence decreased by 16%.

Why is glycated hemoglobin a "gold standard" for blood glucose monitoring?

- can reflect the average blood glucose level of the previous 2-3 months, to determine the overall situation of blood glucose control.

- you can determine whether the treatment is effective, if not up to standard, should improve the program.

- it is a window for the diagnosis of diabetes, the observation of disease, and the probability of complications.
